Neighbors

Some turkey just came right up to the back of the house, bold as brass, and picked the rose hips off the bushes. While I watched.

Actually, there were six of them, about half grown. Maybe the size of chickens. They'd go well on the grill, but you don't eat your neighbors. It's not polite.

Our various neighbors are annoying, but I enjoy them very much.

We recently saw probably a dozen running around the forest when we were driving back from the observatory a few weeks ago. There's the story there of someone going out to refill a liquid nitrogen dewar for the 2.5 meter telescope getting chased by a wild turkey. He used what he had at hand to defend himself and sprayed the bird full in the face with liquid nitrogen. It made the bird VERY angry and didn't slow it down a bit!
