Per All Things Considered, there's now a Morse Code for the "@" symbol so amateur radio operators can exchange email addresses using their hand-operated telegraph keys.
Exchange email addresses.. using...
...
...telegraph...keys.
Tomorrow: ITU announces new Internet Protocol for file exchange using semaphore; new program for exchanging your electronic photos with friends using flash memory cards tied to carrier pigeons; IBM announces the new Babbidge Mark II Difference Engine, with a 55 hp triple-expansion steam engine fueled by lamp oil (no more messy and back-breaking coal shoveling to get your email!).

The snow's getting tired. It's still deep, and it hasn't melted much, but it's settled down to about half its former depth. It's old and crusty and sad-looking. Also brown and becrudified anywhere near the roads.
That doesn't end its danger, though. Folks are only now in the final stages of clearing parking lots. Which, since the snow reached depths beyond what a pickup truck with a blade could push, meant bringing in front end loaders. Sometimes the front-end loaders dump the snow into huge double-bottom gravel haulers to be carried off gods know where.. there must be a huge snow dump somewhere, one that will probably take until July to melt. But mostly it gets piled up at the edge of the parking lot, blocking all possible view of oncoming traffic, that being marginally cheaper.
Which, I beg to inform my fellow residents, does NOT mean you can just pull out without looking. Some, however, do. Makes it interesting around here.

Date: 2004-02-19 01:27 am (UTC)Given the relatively recent implementation of RFC 1149, I consider the telegraph modification to be a significant upgrade.
