End of the World

They keep rescheduling the damned thing
From "Some Apostles will live to see it"
down through every significant anniversary
or any time a preacher had a nightmare

To some hilltop in 1843
to 1900, 1901, 1908, 1910...
to the millennium in 2000 (or was it 2001?)

And now it's set for 2012
Because that's where the Mayans
ran out of paper, bark, knotted strings
or whatever the hell
they used down there

But you know, if this goes on long enough
Sooner or later somebody's going to get it right.

Given that at least one major Christian cult keeps going despite having repeatedly gotten it wrong, I would not worry about the end of the world until people STOP predicting it.

Or something we SHOULD have prepared for catches up with us.

It's just possible that they Mayans have it right! Who knows really? No matter what "some" group is going to claim that they have right (when the world finally ends in whatever cataclysmic, bombastic ball o' fire that wipes us out)...but then of course who's going to be there to hear their claims? :D

It has to do with their gods among the stars. One side of the milky way is all the birth/living gods and on the other death/destruction. In 2012 the earth moves through the disk of our galaxy to the other side (that disk being the milky way). That it would be the end of the all time fit their beliefs.
There has been a periodic kill of most life on Earth but the period doesn't match a 2012 event.
