Every so often, something happens to remind me just how far north I live. Take Monday morning, for example.
I had the day off, so I was sleeping late. I woke up to a strange thing; light! It was about 9:30, and the sun was blazing from a clear sky perhaps a couple fingerbreadths above the southeastern horizon.
It didn't stay clear long. Within half an hour a solid overcast had blown in on a southerly gale. And so it has continued ever since. And yet, that short moment of light lifted my heart. It seems like a promise.
My usual November collapse this year was more of an exhaustion than the usual waves of sobbing drama, although there was a bit of that too. Just so I can know I made a fool of myself again, about things that weren't real. That probably cost me a new friendship or two, besides trying the patience of all those who understand, and who put up with me out of the kindness of their hearts.
But things will be better now. Because this season marks the return of the light.
That's what the holiday is all about, isn't it? It's about the return of the Light, out of the depths of a winter of despair. Not just the light of the sun, but the light of the world, whatever and whoever the light of your world may be.
Today I wish for you the glory of that light. And I wish for you enough faith to know that your light is always there somewhere, even on the darkest days. It is always waiting for you, and however far away it seems, somehow it will always find its way back to you again.
