Teph laughs at the way I keep buying coffee makers. I think I just stopped doing that, because I bought a Bialetti Moka Express.

If you are from Europe, you've probably known these all your life. But to me, this gadget is a revelation. It's a stovetop coffeepot that makes something the purists assure me isn't really espresso. It does it quickly and it does so without scorching the coffee.

The supposedly-not-espresso from this coffee pot, plus perhaps a third as much warmed milk-- ahhh. Add a shot of vanilla syrup and it's so decadent I should probably be arrested for it.

The only thing worrying me is why the HECK haven't I heard of this gadget before? It's supposed to be about as common as bread in Europe, but mine is the first one I've ever seen.

I can only assume it's some vast Conspiricy of Silence engendered by the industry devoted to making $80 plastic drip coffee machines that quickly burn themselves out and need to be replaced. I mean, really. We Americans love our needlessly-electrified gadgets, but given fast, near-perfect coffee, I'm sure that even WE would be willing to overlook the fact that the Moka Express doesn't have, or need, a cord. And for those who can't overlook it, they DO make a self-heated, plug-in version.

Alas, the coffee it makes is STRONG. I'd love a cup now, but it would have me on the spin cycle until 3:00 in the morning.

This puppy might actually drive me to buy DECAF. Which before, I would have thought about as likely as the Pope resigning to take the pulpit of a Baptist church in rural Arkansas.

Oh man. My mom had one of those she never used (the electric one is cooler and easier, no?). If I had of known at the time...

Europeans are kind of known for drinking their coffee at a concentration that causes most Americans to gag, and would probably kill them if it wasn't for the surge in popularity of espresso in the last ten years. While some people here enjoy coffee black, the idea of drinking European coffee black is akin to freebasing a neutron star. It will probably hurt.

I should also note that I have a flair for the overdramatic.

Oh Hafoc! You've discovered the joys of the Moka! Woot! It's my primary camping coffee maker, as well as grey and dreary day perkup.

If you want true joy from the machine, pick up some French Market (or better yet, Cafe Du Monde) coffee, it's a double strength dark (like the black pits of oblivion dark) roast, with a hint of chicory. Mix the result half and half with evaporated milk and it's still a luscious dark brown, and the best thing to hit your coffee mug (although, it will stain)

Regarding why you haven't heard of it before, I've only ever seen it at Macy's in the clearance section, or in old fashioned hardware stores. (Or *very* expensively at gourmet coffee shops)
