Mice

Teffie says mice are dumb, and I guess I have to agree. I mean, I don't expect the little creature to realize the significance of the dry fish-flavored grain pellets he found in the bowl on the kitchen floor, but you'd think that after being chased around the house, chittering madly in terror, being pinned down on THREE CONSECUTIVE NIGHTS by CATS (the Feline Contingent being amazingly inept mousers) he'd get the idea that maybe the garage, or outside, would be a safer place to be.

The third time is the charm, apparently. Shadow Cat chased him to the living room. Then Teph made the mistake of opening her bedroom door to see what the commotion was about. The mouse made a dash. Teph eeped and jumped-- she's not afraid of mice, but she wasn't expecting some CREATURE to come charging at her ankles from the darkness. The mouse ran in and dived under her bookshelves, or the clothes hamper, or into the box of books, or something. It wasn't clear where he was-- which was the whole point of his actions, of course.

Shadow Cat was going nuts around the clothes hamper. "I don't think he's under there," Teph said, as she lifted it. He was. He shot out and ran for the hall, Shadow Cat in hot pursuit. Shadow pinned the mouse down again. Mad terrified chittering.

I put my hand over Shadow's paws, catching a deep claw scratch in the process. Picked up the mouse, gently, and carried him to the front door and out onto the porch. Letting up on my grip for an instant, I was looking for a place to put him when he squirmed free, climbed my thumb, and leaped off. Plop, onto the concrete. Zoop, off the edge of the porch and into the holly bushes.

I'm sure he doesn't know he's rescued. And I'm sure he'll just go around through the garage and back to the kitchen, where the crunchy fish-flavored grain nuggets are in constant supply. Because obviously, if he can escape the big mean huge human, those little cats are no problem. Cats? He laughs-- or chitters-- in the face of cats.

Because mice are dumb.

To paraphrase a line from Spaceballs:

"Cats will triumph because mice is dumb." :D
