The local newspaper isn't worth having. It's a rah-rah rag for the local real estate industry, the so-called developers who only destroy, the worshippers of this town's one true god: I am thy Lord Dollar Almighty. Thou shalt rape the world for Me.

But, out of the goodness of their hearts, they will give you free gratis the advertising section of the newspaper, the part you'd throw away even if you DID subscribe to the thing. Not through the mail, though. They put it in a newspaper tube they put up on your front lawn.

That's the rub. I have a reflector post I put up out there so the snowplows would see and, hopefully, avoid my mailbox. And the yobbos from the newspaper come around about four times a year and put one of their tubes on it, blocking the reflector.

I've called and asked them not to. They always say they won't. But of course like all these mass operations they have no idea who lives where. The word goes out, put up tubes in this, that, and t'other neighborhood, and up goes another one on my lawn.

I'd call the cops on them, but I don't think I have any grounds for that. This is on the street's right of way, not officialy speaking my property at all. They probably have as much right to put their tube up as I do to have my mailbox out there.

So... they put them up, and I take them down. And on and on it goes.

But what can I do with all the newspaper tubes? They're perfect, brand new. It seems a pity to toss them out. Being part metal, part plastic, I can't recycle them.

I don't know. Maybe I can make nail bins or out of them or something. But then, after several years, I'd probably get arrested as the dreaded Phantom Newspaper Tube Thief.

"He said the newspaper GAVE him the fifty tubes," Sheriff Jones told this reporter. "He must have thought we was ignert or something. We laughed ourselfs silly before we kicked him in the kidneys until he peed blood."

Ah, the perils of small town life.
