It used to be an insult or a joke for someone to say you worked banker's hours. Does anyone know what banker's hours were?

In the small towns where I grew up, the bank (assuming you had one; some of those towns were so small they didn't) was open 10:00 to 3:00 Monday through Friday, and that was all. Those were "Banker's Hours," and they were pretty much universal.

The other stores in town closed at 5:00, except 7:00 on Fridays. They were open Saturday also. Sunday? Forget about it. Not even the gas stations were open Sunday, except along the freeways. It meant that if we were going to visit Grandpa and Grandma on a weekend we had to do a bit of logistical planning, because their town was off the freeway. A long, long way off the freeway.

One relic of those days is the 7-11 Convenience Store. It got its name from its hours of operation; 7:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Those were exceptionally long hours back then.
