Teph is here! Drove in across countries, and had a pretty good drive, she says. At least this year there wasn't an ice storm to fight. She did get caught in the Friday exodus from Detroit. She didn't expect that. I explained it to her. Other cities have something going on, so that you might actually want to stay there over a weekend. But if you lived in Detroit, or the suburbs, wouldn't you get out any chance you had?

No ice storms, and very little snow. We're about the most southern point in the state where there's general snow cover at the moment, and it's rotted back to an inch or so of hardened, dirty crust. This is NOT usual here. We're supposed to have a week of snow ahead (boo!) which is more normal.

I went down to have Christmas with the relatives (again) yesterday. We can't seem to manage to assemble the family at one time, so I, being closest to The Farm, get to go down there three times before Christmas is over-- the final time will be in March or something.

But I didn't mind this time, because the road was clear. I got out last night instead of staying overnight because the NWS had predicted snow-- down there, not up here. I headed north and by the time I got this far the sky was clear, with a beautiful near-full moon.

For the last five miles I took the old highway, the one that was the main road before the freeway. The lake was beautiful under the moonlight. It was a magic time.

Back when I lived downstate and was much less happy even than I am now, I'd get up at 2:00 or 3:00 am sometimes and head out, driving north along the old highways. You'd hardly meet anyone at that hour. And once or twice I came up that same old highway in the hours before dawn. There was one motel at the edge of town here-- a plain place, not part of any chain, but they kept it attractive, and that big red MOTEL neon sign was the first sign of town you'd see, when you came into here in the darkness along the old highways.

I remember how I'd look at that place; still hours to drive before I got where I was going. It tempted me so much. I wanted to stop in this town, stay a while, rest a bit.

Well, I guess I did.
