Vat O' Food: Today the slow cooker is full of two pounds stew beef, a cup of pearl barley and a cup and a half of water, two small onions chopped up, handful baby carrots, and a bag and a half- oh, about 20, 24 ounces-ish-- of onion pepper stir fry vegetables from Save-A-Lot. And some soy sauce, maybe a quarter cup or so. I don't know. As usual with Vat O' Food, measurements are kind of vague and optional.

I thought of adding some wine, but the only wine I have around is port, and that's sweet. I thought that wouldn't go.

It smells wonderful. By evening it should be well cooked through- it's been on low since before noon. I'm calling it beef pepper stoop because, although the peppers are a small part of it, their scent dominates the other vegetables. And Stoop because right now it's somewhere between soup and stew, although I'm thinking it will be stew by the time it's done cooking.

I went a bit scant on the water for the barley because you always have more moisture than you think you will in the slow cooker. Left out the hot sauce I'd thought to add because Teph wouldn't like it, and she says hot spices just get hotter in the slow cooker- I can add a dash of fake Tobasco in my own bowl later if I still want it. Easier to put the stuff in than to take it out afterward, that's for sure.

Pearl Barley sounds like she should be a blues singer, doesn't she? Maybe she sings in the same Western saloon where the crusty old prospector Bituminous "Bit" Coldpatch hangs out when he's not out in the desert.
