What American accent do you have?

Northern. Whether you have the world famous Inland North accent of the Great Lakes area, or the radio-friendly sound of upstate NY and western New England, your accent is what used to set the standard for American English pronunciation (not much anymore now that the Inland North sounds like it does).

If you are not from the North, you are probably one of the following:
(a) A Southerner who hates Southern accents and tries really hard to "talk right"; or
(b) A New Yorker or New Jerseyan who doesn't have the full accent

Take this quiz now - it's easy!
We're going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

I don't know what he's talkin aboot. Me an' Tuyvl, we went Green Bay t'udder day an we stopped by da Wayside for a road pop, y'unnerstan? An we was talkin' boot dem dam ouddastaters from Uhiah an Indianer an Tuyvl, he says "Damn glad we don't talk wit no funny accent like dem guys."

An I jus cracked open anudder road pop and I says "Damn straight, bubba."

Well, no I don't, either. Aside from one of the few people left in the world who knows that the proper word for carbonated beverages is POP, I don't think my accent is very distinctive. I mean, I sound like my mother taught English, because...

But other than that, not much.

If anyone who knows me in person thinks otherwise, let me know. I'd be delighted to think my speech had some color to it.
