Justice

Bob was Township Supervisor. He wanted the land behind his house, so he tried to scare the old farmer into selling.

"You know, in the Depression, back in 1935, your father didn't pay the property taxes on your farm. What with interest and all, it would be a pretty penny by now. Maybe a tax sale..."

The old farmer went crazy trying to find the receipt. His wife tried to calm him, then tried to help him find the receipt because that would calm him.

In the uproar she forgot to take her medicine for a couple of days. She had a stroke and spent the next eight years, the last years of her life, in a nursing home. Without her to take care of him, the old farmer died before six months had passed.

But he had children. Bob didn't get the land.

Many years later, Bob died of cancer. "It's God's justice," my aunt said, with a grim glint in her eyes. But in the twenty years or so it took, dozens and dozens of others in the area died of cancer too. Justice?
