Winter arrived with a bang last night. Or more properly, with a boom.

After rain all day, a line of thunderstorms came through, and then the wind and the snow. It wasn't too bad here, except for those alarming CRACK sounds from out in the woods. They say the wind hit 75 MPH in places.

This morning most of the schools were closed. I'm sure the snow, on top of rain turned to ice, was part of the decision. The occasional whiteout probably helped too. But the main reason had to be the widespread power failures.

I got in to work and found the power was almost out there too. Being a larger building it has multiple power lines (or a high voltage line with multiple phases, perhaps) coming in. However many lines come in, and however they're wired, we had only one 120-volt circuit box alive. We had desk lamps but that was about it. So they closed the office and I went home for the morning.

To have power fail at home too. No big yank. I've got backup heat. I've got camping gear for cooking and light. The only thing that worried me was water. When the power fails the pump stops. The house (like most) has a pressure tank, so I had maybe two flushes worth of water-- or an equivalent amount to drink or cook with. Hopefully the power would be back on before I needed more.

It was. It came on about 11:00. I cooked lunch, and then went back to the office to finish the work day.

So now I've got a plate of scrambled-eggs-and-stuff-- I wanted an omlette but I was in too big a hurry to make one-- at the Hour of Cobalt Blue. I'm sitting here watching the world outside turn that deep blue color, the way it does here on overcast winter evenings. Or mornings, as the sun rises.

It's a strange phenomenon. From inside everything out looks cobalt blue. But if you're outside it's plain gray, slowly darkening away to nothing.

We're supposed to get four or five more inches of snow this evening, maybe. But there's no wind to speak of. It shouldn't amount to much trouble.
